How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided calibrated dropper for accurate dosing. Can be mixed with a small amount of water or juice if needed.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2 to 6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours. Some biliary excretion also occurs.
Half life
Plasma half-life averages 3 to 4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food can slightly delay absorption but does not significantly alter its extent.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not significantly metabolized in vivo.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or to penicillin antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concurrent use with warfarin may increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is recommended.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported when co-administered with cefixime.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, away from moisture and direct light. Once reconstituted, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis. Treatment is generally symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during lactation should be done with caution, and a physician should be consulted.
