Description
Overview of the medicine
Zenoxy 250 mg Capsule contains Cefalexin, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat various bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, and ear.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose is 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg to 1 g every 12 hours. For severe infections, the dose may be increased up to 4 g per day.
Elderly
Same as adults, but dose adjustment may be necessary for significant renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-50 mL/min: 250 mg every 8-12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min: 250 mg every 12-24 hours.
How to Take
Take Zenoxy 250 mg Capsule orally with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This leads to cell lysis and death of susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 70-80% within 6 hours) by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1 hour (in individuals with normal renal function); prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially on an empty stomach. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; less than 15% of the dose is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Cefalexin or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Cephalosporins, including cefalexin, may rarely alter gut flora, leading to reduced Vitamin K synthesis and potential enhancement of anticoagulant effects of warfarin. Monitor INR closely.
Metformin
Cefalexin may increase metformin plasma concentrations. Monitor for potential metformin toxicity.
Probenecid
Probenecid decreases the renal excretion of cefalexin, which may result in increased and prolonged plasma concentrations of cefalexin.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. Management is primarily supportive; activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion was recent. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases or in patients with impaired renal function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fetal risk. Limited data in pregnant women suggest no increased risk of major birth defects. Cefalexin is excreted in small amounts into breast milk. Generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but use with caution and observe infant for potential side effects like diarrhea or thrush.
