Description
Overview of the medicine
Zenvit-C 250 mg Chewable Tablet is a vitamin C supplement used to prevent or treat vitamin C deficiency and to boost the immune system. It acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For vitamin C deficiency: 250-500 mg daily. For general supplementation: 250 mg daily or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, usually 250 mg daily for supplementation.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to the risk of oxalate stone formation with high doses. Consult a physician for appropriate dosing.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed or allowed to dissolve in the mouth. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage by free radicals. It is essential for collagen synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, iron absorption, immune function, and wound healing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relatively rapid absorption with peak plasma levels typically within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys. Excess amounts are rapidly excreted unchanged in the urine. Renal threshold for excretion is about 1.5 mg/dL.
Half life
Plasma half-life varies, generally 8-40 minutes for small doses, but can be several hours with saturated body stores.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine. Absorption decreases with increasing dose.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, including ascorbic acid-2-sulfate and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- •Patients with hemochromatosis (iron overload) should avoid high doses of Vitamin C
Drug Interactions
Aspirin
Aspirin may decrease Vitamin C absorption and increase its urinary excretion.
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may potentially decrease the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Iron supplements
Vitamin C enhances the absorption of non-heme iron.
Storage
Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare and generally not serious. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps) and, rarely, renal oxalate stones in predisposed individuals with very high chronic doses.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe in recommended dietary allowances during pregnancy and lactation. High doses should be used with caution and under medical supervision.
