Description
Overview of the medicine
Ziflu 10 mg Syrup is an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza (flu) caused by influenza A and B viruses. It works by stopping the flu virus from spreading inside the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Treatment: 75 mg twice daily for 5 days. Prophylaxis: 75 mg once daily for at least 7-10 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed for elderly patients unless renal impairment is present. Follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is required for patients with creatinine clearance ≤30 mL/min. Consult a physician for specific recommendations.
How to Take
Ziflu syrup should be taken orally, with or without food. Taking it with food may improve tolerability and reduce gastrointestinal side effects. An appropriate measuring device should be used for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Oseltamivir is a selective inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase, an enzyme essential for viral replication and the release of progeny virus from infected cells. By inhibiting neuraminidase, Oseltamivir prevents the virus from budding from the host cell and spreading to other cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom improvement is typically observed within 1-2 days of initiation of treatment.
Excretion
The active metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate, is primarily excreted renally via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life of oseltamivir carboxylate is 6 to 10 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and extensively converted to the active metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate. Bioavailability of oseltamivir carboxylate is approximately 75%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by hepatic esterases to the active metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate. No involvement of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Oseltamivir Phosphate or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Coadministration with probenecid results in an approximate 2-fold increase in exposure to oseltamivir carboxylate. Dose adjustment is generally not required.
Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine
Oseltamivir may inhibit the replication of live attenuated influenza vaccine. Avoid use of live attenuated influenza vaccine within 2 days before and 2 weeks after Ziflu administration.
Storage
Store unopened Ziflu syrup powder at room temperature (20°C-25°C). Store reconstituted suspension under refrigeration (2°C-8°C); do not freeze. Discard any unused portion after 10-17 days.
Overdose
Limited information is available regarding overdose. Symptoms of overdose are expected to be similar to known side effects. Management should be supportive and directed at the clinical symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Oseltamivir is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
