Description
Overview of the medicine
Zimon Plus 25 mcg Syrup is a vitamin D3 supplement indicated for the prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency. It helps in maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and immune function.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For vitamin D deficiency, typically 25-50 mcg (1000-2000 IU) daily, or as directed by a physician based on serum 25(OH)D levels.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; however, elderly patients may require higher doses due to reduced skin synthesis and absorption. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary, especially if calcium and phosphate levels are not adequately monitored. Consult a physician or nephrologist.
How to Take
Zimon Plus Syrup should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with a meal, particularly one containing fat, may enhance absorption. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is biologically inactive and is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcifediol), which is then further converted in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the active form of Vitamin D. Calcitriol regulates calcium and phosphate homeostasis, promotes bone mineralization, and supports immune modulation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects on calcium and bone metabolism are typically observed over several days to weeks, as the body converts cholecalciferol to its active form.
Excretion
Metabolites of vitamin D are primarily excreted via bile and feces, with a minor amount excreted in the urine.
Half life
The elimination half-life of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) is approximately 15 days, while that of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol) is about 4-6 hours. However, vitamin D stores in adipose tissue can last for months.
Absorption
Cholecalciferol is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine. Absorption is enhanced by the presence of bile salts and dietary fat.
Metabolism
Cholecalciferol is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcifediol) by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Calcifediol is then further hydroxylated in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the biologically active form, by 1-alpha-hydroxylase.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cholecalciferol or any components of the syrup
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood)
- Vitamin D toxicity
- Severe renal impairment with hyperphosphatemia (high phosphate levels in the blood)
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias with hypercalcemia, which can be induced by excessive vitamin D.
Corticosteroids
May reduce the effects of vitamin D by inhibiting calcium absorption and increasing vitamin D metabolism.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia by reducing calcium excretion.
Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Orlistat
May reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamin D. Separate administration by several hours.
Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine)
May increase vitamin D metabolism, potentially requiring higher doses of Zimon Plus.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from direct light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of vitamin D overdose (vitamin D toxicity or hypervitaminosis D) are primarily due to hypercalcemia and include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, polyuria, polydipsia, weakness, headache, and constipation. Severe cases can lead to renal impairment, cardiac arrhythmias, and soft tissue calcification. Treatment involves discontinuing vitamin D, low calcium diet, hydration, and potentially corticosteroids or diuretics under medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Vitamin D is essential during pregnancy and lactation. Zimon Plus can be used at recommended doses under medical supervision. Excessive doses should be avoided as they may lead to hypercalcemia in the mother and fetus, potentially causing adverse effects.

YesClinical Trials
Cholecalciferol has been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials focusing on vitamin D deficiency, bone health, osteoporosis, and its role in various chronic diseases. Ongoing research continues to explore its broader health benefits.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum 25(OH)D levels (to assess vitamin D status and guide dosing)
- Serum calcium levels (to monitor for hypercalcemia, especially during high-dose therapy)
- Serum phosphate levels
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine, BUN) in patients with kidney impairment
Doctor Notes
- Always assess baseline vitamin D levels before initiating high-dose therapy.
- Educate patients on the importance of adhering to prescribed doses and the risks of self-medication.
- Monitor serum calcium, phosphate, and renal function, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions or those on concomitant medications that affect calcium metabolism.
Patient Guidelines
- Follow your doctor's instructions for dosage and duration of treatment.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a healthcare professional.
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
- Store the syrup properly as instructed to maintain its efficacy.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Zimon Plus is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience any side effects that impair your judgment or motor skills, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and other essential nutrients.
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercises to promote bone health.
- Moderate sun exposure can help the body synthesize vitamin D, but practice sun safety.
