Description
Overview of the medicine
An essential trace element involved in numerous enzymatic functions, immune system, cell growth, and crucial for treating zinc deficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For zinc deficiency: 20-50 mg elemental zinc once daily. For common cold/immunity: 10-25 mg daily.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but may need adjustment based on renal function or other medications.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required for mild to moderate impairment. Consult doctor for severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not take with foods high in phytates (e.g., whole grains, legumes) or dairy products.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc is a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, and tissue repair. It plays a critical role in immune function, growth, and development.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, effects typically seen after several days to weeks of regular supplementation.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via feces (90%), with a small amount excreted in urine and sweat.
Half life
Plasma half-life is around 2-3 hours, but tissue turnover is much slower.
Absorption
Variable absorption (10-40%) from the gastrointestinal tract, influenced by dietary factors like phytates and fiber.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily incorporated into various proteins and enzymes throughout the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to zinc or any components of the formulation.
- Patients with significant copper deficiency (high zinc intake can exacerbate copper deficiency).
Drug Interactions
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce the absorption of penicillamine.
Iron supplements
High doses of zinc can interfere with iron absorption. Take at different times of the day.
Calcium supplements
High doses of calcium can interfere with zinc absorption.
Tetracyclines (e.g., Doxycycline)
Zinc can decrease the absorption of tetracyclines. Take zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after tetracyclines.
Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Zinc can decrease the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Take zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after fluoroquinolones.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. Chronic overdose can lead to copper deficiency, anemia, and immune suppression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zinc is essential during pregnancy and lactation, but excessive doses should be avoided. Consult a doctor before taking supplements, especially high doses.

YesClinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials support the use of zinc for childhood diarrhea, immune system enhancement, and treatment of zinc deficiency. Ongoing research explores its role in other conditions.
Lab Monitoring
- Plasma zinc levels (if deficiency is suspected or for long-term high-dose therapy).
- Copper levels (if prolonged high-dose zinc is used, to monitor for copper deficiency).
Doctor Notes
- Crucial for managing acute childhood diarrhea; ensure proper hydration along with zinc.
- Advise patients on potential drug-food and drug-drug interactions, especially with antibiotics and iron.
- Monitor for signs of copper deficiency in patients on long-term high-dose zinc.
Patient Guidelines
- Take with food to reduce stomach upset.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Zinc supplementation is not known to impair the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in zinc-containing foods (e.g., meat, shellfish, legumes, nuts).
- Practice good hygiene, especially during diarrhea, to prevent further infections.
