Description
Overview of the medicine
Ziron-F 150 mg capsule is a combination of Ferrous Fumarate and Folic Acid, primarily used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, 1 capsule daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment usually required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with or immediately after a meal to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Do not chew or crush the capsule. May be taken with water.
Mechanism of Action
Ferrous Fumarate provides elemental iron, a crucial component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes. Folic acid is a B vitamin necessary for DNA synthesis, cell division, and erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, correction of anemia seen within weeks.
Excretion
Iron primarily via feces (unabsorbed); Folic acid primarily via urine.
Half life
Iron not excreted via typical half-life; Folic acid approx. 3-10 hours.
Absorption
Iron absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum; Folic acid absorbed primarily in the small intestine.
Metabolism
Iron incorporated into hemoglobin; Folic acid metabolized in the liver to active forms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ferrous Fumarate, Folic Acid, or any excipients
- Hemochromatosis or other iron overload syndromes
- Repeated blood transfusions
- Pernicious anemia (without vitamin B12 supplementation)
Drug Interactions
Vitamin C
Enhances iron absorption.
Levothyroxine
Iron may reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Tetracyclines and Quinolones
Iron can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer iron at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Antacids (e.g., calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide)
May reduce iron absorption. Take iron 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms of iron overdose may include severe gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, pallor, cyanosis, and drowsiness. In severe cases, circulatory collapse, coma, and death may occur. Folic acid overdose is generally non-toxic. Seek immediate medical attention in case of suspected overdose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ziron-F is often recommended during pregnancy and lactation for the prevention and treatment of iron and folic acid deficiency, as these periods increase nutritional demands. Consult a doctor before use.
