Description
Overview of the medicine
Zocare-005-004 Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing a combination of Naphazoline HCl (a decongestant), Pheniramine Maleate (an antihistamine), and Boric Acid (a mild antiseptic). It is used to relieve redness, itching, and irritation associated with allergic conjunctivitis and minor eye irritations.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to four times daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Use with caution in elderly patients with cardiovascular disease or glaucoma.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the drops, and close the eye gently. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Naphazoline HCl acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing redness by constricting blood vessels in the conjunctiva. Pheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors, thereby alleviating itching and allergic reactions. Boric Acid acts as a mild antiseptic and buffering agent, helping to cleanse the eye and maintain its natural pH.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes for decongestant and antihistaminic effects.
Excretion
Primarily local action; any systemically absorbed components would be excreted via renal pathways.
Half life
Not well established for ocular application; systemic half-life of components is not clinically relevant for topical use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption expected due to topical ophthalmic administration; effects are primarily local.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism; components might be metabolized locally or systemically if absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- •Narrow-angle glaucoma (due to naphazoline)
- •Patients taking MAO inhibitors
Drug Interactions
MAO Inhibitors
Concurrent use may lead to a hypertensive crisis due to naphazoline.
Tricyclic Antidepressants
May potentiate the pressor effect of naphazoline.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with proper topical ophthalmic administration. In case of accidental oral ingestion, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms might include central nervous system depression, hypotension, or bradycardia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation; consult a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk, but specific studies are often lacking.
