Description
Overview of the medicine
Zolecon 1% Cream is a topical antifungal medication used to treat a variety of skin infections caused by fungi, including athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area and surrounding skin, gently rubbing it in, 2 to 3 times daily. Continue treatment for 2-4 weeks, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustments are required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustments are required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a thin layer and rub gently until it disappears. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole, the active ingredient, inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased cell membrane permeability, leakage of essential intracellular components, and ultimately, fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief usually begins within a few days of treatment, but a full course (2-4 weeks) is often required for complete eradication of the infection.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed metabolites are primarily excreted via bile and feces. Unabsorbed drug remains on the skin surface.
Half life
Due to minimal systemic absorption, a systemic half-life is not clinically significant or well-defined for topical application. The drug primarily acts locally at the site of application.
Absorption
Following topical application, clotrimazole is minimally absorbed through the skin. Systemic absorption is very low, typically less than 0.5% of the applied dose, even on inflamed skin.
Metabolism
Any absorbed clotrimazole is rapidly metabolized in the liver to inactive compounds.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any other ingredients of the cream.
- Do not use on eyes, mouth, or internal mucous membranes.
Drug Interactions
Other topical medications
Avoid concomitant use of other topical antifungals or corticosteroids on the same area unless advised by a doctor, as they may interfere with the efficacy of Zolecon cream.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to poor absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clotrimazole cream is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when applied topically, as systemic absorption is minimal. However, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before use.
