Description
Overview of the medicine
Zovia-Silver is a combined oral contraceptive tablet containing ethynodiol diacetate (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen), often with iron supplements in the inactive pills, used primarily to prevent pregnancy.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One tablet orally once daily at the same time each day for 21 or 24 consecutive days, followed by 7 or 4 days of inactive/iron-containing tablets, depending on the specific pack regimen.
Elderly
Not indicated for postmenopausal women.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take one tablet orally at the same time each day. Start with the first active tablet on the first day of menstruation or the first Sunday after menstruation begins. Follow the arrows on the pack.
Mechanism of Action
Primarily suppresses ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and alters the endometrium to inhibit implantation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Contraceptive effect usually starts after 7 consecutive days of active pill use in the first cycle.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Ethinyl Estradiol: 13-27 hours; Norethindrone (active metabolite of Ethynodiol Diacetate): 5-14 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Ethynodiol diacetate is rapidly deacylated to norethindrone which is then metabolized.
Metabolism
Both hormones undergo extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Ethinyl estradiol is primarily metabolized via CYP3A4. Ethynodiol diacetate is converted to norethindrone and then metabolized further.
