Description
Overview of the medicine
Zultan eye drop is a prostaglandin F2α analogue containing Latanoprost, used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Do not exceed one drop daily as more frequent administration may decrease the intraocular pressure lowering effect.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment recommended for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s). If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least five minutes apart. Avoid contact with the dropper tip to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Zultan (Latanoprost) reduces intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, primarily through the uveoscleral pathway and to a lesser extent through the trabecular meshwork.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
3-4 hours
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys after hepatic metabolism.
Half life
Approximately 17 minutes (active acid form)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed through the cornea as an inactive ester, which is then hydrolyzed to the biologically active Latanoprost acid.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites via fatty acid beta-oxidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Latanoprost or any other ingredient in Zultan eye drop
Drug Interactions
Other prostaglandin analogues
Concurrent use of two prostaglandin analogues may paradoxically increase intraocular pressure and is therefore not recommended.
Storage
Store unopened bottles in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Protect from light. After opening, store at room temperature (up to 25°C) and discard after 4 weeks.
Overdose
Ocular overdose with Zultan (Latanoprost) is unlikely to occur with ophthalmic administration. If accidental ingestion occurs, symptomatic treatment may be required. The most common ocular side effects observed with higher dosages are conjunctival hyperemia and ocular irritation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Latanoprost and its metabolites are excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
