Description
Overview of the medicine
Zuracin 125 mg Suspension contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg (10-20 ml of 125 mg/5 ml suspension) twice daily depending on infection severity and type.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but renal function should be considered for dose adjustment.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 10-29 mL/min: 125-250 mg every 24 hours. Creatinine clearance <10 mL/min: 125-250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
Administer orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. For optimal absorption, it is recommended to take Cefuroxime Axetil suspension with food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to lysis and death of the bacterial cell.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys, mainly as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration, enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by esterases in the intestinal mucosa and blood to active cefuroxime.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease the bioavailability of cefuroxime. Administer at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs serum concentrations of cefuroxime by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise using alternative birth control methods.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Keep away from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 10 days. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can reduce serum cefuroxime levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. While studies in animals have not shown harm, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

- Renal function tests (e.g., serum creatinine, BUN) especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged high-dose therapy.
- Hepatic function tests (e.g., ALT, AST) if signs of liver dysfunction develop or during prolonged therapy.
- Complete blood count (CBC) during prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Confirm bacterial etiology before prescribing antibiotics.
- Adjust dose in renal impairment.
- Counsel patients on completing the full course to prevent resistance.
- Monitor for signs of _Clostridioides difficile_ infection.
