Description
Overview of the medicine
Zylomax 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections throughout the body. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dosage is 500 mg orally every 12 hours for 5-10 days, depending on the infection severity and type.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required unless there is significant renal impairment. Use with caution.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance <30 mL/min. Consult a physician for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Take Zylomax 500 mg Tablet orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. It should be taken at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Xylomacin, the active ingredient in Zylomax, acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (via urine) and to a lesser extent through feces.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism; mainly excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Xylomacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
- History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with quinolone use.
- Children and adolescents below 18 years of age (due to risk of joint damage).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR/PT carefully.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline plasma levels, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture when co-administered.
Iron and Zinc supplements
Can decrease Zylomax absorption. Take Zylomax at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these supplements.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
Reduce absorption of Zylomax. Administer Zylomax at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage may be performed. Maintain adequate hydration. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing Xylomacin. Seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zylomax is generally not recommended during pregnancy (Pregnancy Category C) and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus and infant, including joint damage. Consult your doctor for alternative treatments.
