Action XR (Metformin Hydrochloride) is an oral antidiabetic drug used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps control blood sugar levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver, decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines, and improving insulin sensitivity.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 500 mg once daily with evening meal, increase gradually to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should be made based on glycemic control and tolerability.
Elderly
Initiate at the lower end of the dosing range, considering renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m²). Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
How to Take
Swallow whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Metformin works by reducing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
