Overview of the medicine
Aegis 200 mg capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 200 mg to 400 mg once daily, or 200 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required unless there is severe renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min, dosage adjustment is necessary. For CrCl 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose. For CrCl <20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Aegis 200 mg capsule can be taken orally with or without food. To ensure complete absorption and effectiveness, it is recommended to take it at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Excreted via urine (about 50%) and bile.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food does not significantly alter absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- •History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any type of penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concomitant administration with Cefixime may increase prothrombin time (INR), requiring careful monitoring and dose adjustment of anticoagulants.
Carbamazepine
Elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported when co-administered with Cefixime.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment is generally symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Small amounts of Cefixime are excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when Cefixime is administered to a nursing woman.
