Description
Overview of the medicine
Afalino 50 mg Tablet is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, angina, and certain heart rhythm disorders. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, like epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 50 mg once daily, increased to 100-200 mg daily if needed, depending on response. Max 400 mg/day.
Elderly
Lower initial doses (e.g., 25 mg once daily) may be appropriate, with careful titration.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min). Consult physician.
How to Take
Take Afalino 50 mg Tablet orally with or without food, usually once daily. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Afalino is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist. It blocks both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to decreased heart rate, reduced myocardial contractility, and lower blood pressure. It also inhibits renin release.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine (both unchanged drug and metabolites).
Half life
3-6 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; however, it undergoes significant first-pass metabolism, resulting in bioavailability of about 30-50%.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by cytochrome P450 enzymes (e.g., CYP2D6).
