Description
Overview of the medicine
Airway 5 mg Tablet is used to prevent and treat asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It contains Montelukast as the active ingredient.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults; adult dose is usually 10 mg.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary for elderly patients.
Children
For children 6-14 years: 5 mg once daily in the evening. For children 2-5 years: 4 mg (chewable tablet).
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily in the evening, with or without food. For asthma, take in the evening. For allergic rhinitis, the time of administration may be individualized. For exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, take at least 2 hours before exercise.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively blocks the action of leukotrienes, which are natural substances in the body that cause inflammation, narrowing of airways, and mucus production. By blocking these effects, it helps to improve asthma symptoms and allergic rhinitis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 day for asthma/allergic rhinitis relief.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in faeces (approximately 86%) and to a lesser extent in urine (less than 0.2%) via bile.
Half life
Approximately 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration achieved in 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP2C8, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9 enzymes.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any component of the tablet

Rifampin
May decrease the plasma concentration of Montelukast.
Phenobarbital
May decrease the plasma concentration of Montelukast.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.

Symptoms of overdose include abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is unknown, use with caution in nursing mothers.
