Description
Overview of the medicine
Albendazole is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infestations. This 100 mg suspension is specifically formulated for oral administration, often preferred for children and those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most intestinal nematodes (e.g., roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm): 400 mg as a single dose. For Giardiasis: 400 mg once daily for 5 days. For other systemic helminthiasis, consult physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for intestinal infections, but caution advised due to potential comorbidities and hepatic/renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is considered necessary for patients with impaired renal function, but caution is advised. Consult a doctor.
Pediatric_children
For children 1-2 years: 200 mg as a single dose for most intestinal nematodes. For children >2 years: 400 mg as a single dose for most intestinal nematodes. Dosage varies for other infections, consult physician.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before use. Can be taken with or without food for most intestinal infections, but absorption is enhanced with fatty meals, especially for systemic infections. For young children, it can be mixed with a small amount of food.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole works by selectively binding to beta-tubulin, a protein essential for the survival of parasitic worms. This binding inhibits the polymerization of tubulin, disrupting cellular structures like microtubules and impairing glucose uptake, leading to the immobilization and death of the parasites.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by parasite and location, generally within hours for some intestinal infections.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as albendazole sulfoxide and its metabolites.
Half life
Albendazole sulfoxide: 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the GI tract (<5%). Absorption significantly increases (up to 5-fold) with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively first-pass metabolized in the liver to albendazole sulfoxide (active metabolite) and then to albendazole sulfone (inactive).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the formulation
- •Pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine
Increases plasma concentration of albendazole sulfoxide, potentially enhancing its effect.
Praziquantel
Increases plasma concentration of albendazole sulfoxide.
Theophylline
Albendazole may decrease theophylline clearance, requiring dosage adjustment.
Dexamethasone
Increases plasma concentration of albendazole sulfoxide.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment and general supportive measures should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered.
