Description
Overview of the medicine
Albizox 500 mg Tablet contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic medication used to treat various parasitic worm infections, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and pinworm. It works by preventing the worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), which leads to their depletion of energy and eventual death.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal worms (e.g., Ascariasis, Hookworm, Pinworm, Whipworm): 400 mg as a single dose. For Strongyloidiasis or Taeniasis: 400 mg once daily for 3 consecutive days. For Neurocysticercosis or Hydatid disease: Dosage varies and should be determined by a physician, often 400 mg twice daily with meals for several weeks to months.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; no specific dose adjustments are typically required, but caution is advised in those with significant hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
Albizox 500 mg Tablet should be taken orally with food, especially a fatty meal, to enhance absorption. Tablets can be chewed, crushed, or swallowed whole with water. For young children or individuals with difficulty swallowing, the tablet can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to and inhibits beta-tubulin polymerization in parasitic worms, leading to the disruption of microtubule formation. This impairs glucose uptake, glycogen utilization, and ATP production, ultimately paralyzing and killing the worms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within a few days to a week depending on the type of infection.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the bile, with a small amount excreted in urine as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours for the active metabolite (Albendazole sulfoxide).
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (less than 5%). Absorption is significantly increased with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the formulation
- •Pregnancy (especially in the first trimester, unless potential benefits outweigh risks)
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May decrease albendazole sulfoxide plasma concentrations.
Cimetidine
May increase albendazole sulfoxide plasma concentrations, potentially leading to increased side effects.
Praziquantel
May increase albendazole sulfoxide plasma concentrations.
Theophylline
Albendazole may decrease theophylline clearance, potentially increasing theophylline levels. Monitor theophylline levels if co-administered.
Dexamethasone
May increase albendazole sulfoxide plasma concentrations.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent. Monitor vital signs and provide general supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Albendazole is classified as Pregnancy Category C. It should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, unless the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the fetus. It is unknown whether albendazole or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
