Description
Overview of the medicine
Alercon-01 Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing Naphazoline Hydrochloride and Antazoline Phosphate, used for the relief of allergic conjunctivitis symptoms such as redness, itching, and watering of the eyes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease or glaucoma.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pocket, instil drops, and gently close eye. Do not touch dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Naphazoline acts as a sympathomimetic amine, causing vasoconstriction and reducing ocular redness. Antazoline is an H1-receptor antagonist (antihistamine) that blocks histamine action, thereby relieving itching and watery eyes associated with allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes.
Excretion
Not extensively studied for topical ophthalmic route; primarily local elimination. Any absorbed systemic drug is excreted renally.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption; local effect duration is a few hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. Local absorption into ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Primarily local metabolism in ocular tissues; systemic metabolism (if any significant absorption occurs) is hepatic.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Naphazoline, Antazoline, or any component of the formulation.
- Narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Use with MAO inhibitors.
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May reduce the vasoconstrictive effect of naphazoline.
MAO Inhibitors
Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors can lead to hypertensive crisis due to enhanced sympathomimetic effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with ophthalmic use. If accidentally ingested, symptoms may include drowsiness, sweating, hypotension, or coma (especially in children). Seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Consult a doctor. Data on safety during pregnancy and lactation are limited. Systemic absorption is minimal, but risks should be weighed against benefits.
