Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambolin 15 mg Syrup is a mucolytic agent used to treat various respiratory conditions associated with excessive or thick mucus. It helps to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 10 mL (30 mg) two to three times daily. Children 6-12 years: 5 mL (15 mg) two to three times daily. Children 2-6 years: 2.5 mL (7.5 mg) two to three times daily. Infants up to 2 years: 2.5 mL (7.5 mg) twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage may need to be reduced in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides directly as well as by stimulating serous glands of the respiratory tract. It enhances mucociliary clearance and reduces the viscosity of mucus.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes (mucolytic effect)
Excretion
Mainly via the kidneys (approx. 90%) in the form of metabolites, with a small portion excreted unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours (terminal half-life)
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached after 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with active peptic ulcer disease.
Drug Interactions
Antitussives
Concomitant use with antitussives (cough suppressants) is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to reduced cough reflex.
Antibiotics (Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
