Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat acute and chronic respiratory diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport. It works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough out.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (30 mg) three times daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed for elderly patients, generally follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; dose reduction may be necessary.
How to Take
Amboten syrup should be taken orally, with or without food. Measure the dose using a measuring spoon or cup provided with the syrup.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous glandular cells, leading to increased production of low-viscosity mucus. It also depolymerizes mucopolysaccharides, reducing the viscosity of mucus and aiding in its clearance from the respiratory tract. It also has secretomotoric activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 30 minutes
Excretion
Mainly via the kidneys, with approximately 90% of the dose excreted renally.
Half life
About 7-12 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver via first-pass metabolism, forming inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation
- Patients with rare hereditary conditions of fructose intolerance (due to sorbitol content in some formulations)
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
Concurrent administration of Ambroxol with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) may lead to increased concentration of antibiotics in bronchopulmonary secretions.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote is known. Gastric lavage or emesis may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy (especially first trimester) and lactation only if clearly necessary and after careful risk-benefit assessment by a physician. Ambroxol passes into breast milk.
