Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscous mucus. It helps to thin and loosen phlegm, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (30 mg) 2-3 times daily, or 5 ml (15 mg) 3 times daily. Initial dosage can be higher under medical supervision.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, no specific dose adjustment required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or increased dosing interval may be necessary in severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min). Consult a physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous mucus secretion and by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides, thereby reducing mucus viscosity. It also activates mucociliary clearance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Mucolytic effect starts approximately 30 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (about 90%) as metabolites, with a small portion as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours for the parent drug.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached after 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any excipients.
- Patients with known hereditary problems of fructose intolerance (due to sorbitol content in some formulations).
- Caution in patients with peptic ulcer disease.
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics (Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, should be avoided unless strictly indicated. Limited data exist for lactation; use with caution and only if potential benefits outweigh risks. Consult a doctor.
