Description
Overview of the medicine
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent used to treat acute and chronic respiratory diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport. It works by making the sputum thinner and less viscous, thus facilitating its removal.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (30 mg) 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed, but monitor for renal/hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage may need to be reduced in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Use a measuring spoon/cup provided with the syrup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent that increases bronchial secretion, enhances pulmonary surfactant production, and stimulates ciliary activity. This leads to improved mucociliary clearance and reduced mucus viscosity, facilitating expectoration and making breathing easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Starts acting within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly renal (approximately 90%), primarily as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 10 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, first-pass metabolism, forming inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- Not recommended for children under 2 years of age without medical advice due to limited safety data.
Drug Interactions
Cough suppressants
Concomitant use with cough suppressants may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, Erythromycin, Doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of some antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, should be avoided unless clearly necessary. Excreted in breast milk, so use with caution during lactation or avoid.
