Description
Overview of the medicine
Amoxima 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the penicillin class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 500 mg (2 to 4 measuring spoons of 125 mg/5 ml suspension) every 8 hours, or as directed by a physician. Higher doses may be required for severe infections.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment for elderly patients with normal renal function. Follow adult dosage. Dose adjustment may be necessary in case of renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min). Consult a physician for specific dosage modifications.
How to Take
Amoxima 125 mg Suspension is taken orally, typically three times a day. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for the formation and maintenance of the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged by the kidneys via both glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 60-70% of the dose is excreted in urine within 6 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours. Bioavailability is approximately 70-90%.
Metabolism
Undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism, primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., cephalosporins, carbapenems)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; INR monitoring recommended.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of rash, especially in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity by reducing its renal excretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely reported).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Once reconstituted, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, renal impairment or crystalluria may occur. Treatment is generally supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent. Hemodialysis may be used to remove amoxicillin from circulation in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. It is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but should only be used if clearly needed. Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor for adverse effects in the infant (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
