Description
Overview of the medicine
Anodyne 1% w/w Gel is a topical analgesic preparation used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. It provides a warming sensation upon application.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area not more than 3 to 4 times daily. Gently massage until absorbed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment recommended for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to clean, dry, affected skin. Wash hands thoroughly after application.
Mechanism of Action
Methyl salicylate acts as a counterirritant, producing a sensation of warmth that distracts from pain. It also has mild local analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Menthol provides a cooling sensation, followed by a local anesthetic effect. Together, they create a 'rubefacient' effect, increasing blood flow to the affected area.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes to 15 minutes of application.
Excretion
Salicylic acid and its metabolites are excreted primarily in the urine.
Half life
Salicylic acid (from methyl salicylate) has a half-life of 2-4 hours, but local effects may persist longer.
Absorption
Methyl salicylate and menthol are absorbed through the skin, with systemic absorption being low but variable depending on the application area, skin integrity, and duration of exposure. Methyl salicylate is metabolized to salicylic acid.
Metabolism
Methyl salicylate is hydrolyzed to salicylic acid primarily in the skin and liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to methyl salicylate, menthol, or any component of the gel
- •Application to broken or irritated skin
- •Children under 2 years of age (due to menthol/salicylate toxicity risk)
Drug Interactions
Other topical medications
Avoid applying simultaneously to the same area to prevent potential interactions or irritation.
Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants
Systemic absorption of methyl salicylate, especially with prolonged or extensive use, may increase the risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical application is rare but can occur with extensive use on large areas or broken skin. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, dizziness, hyperventilation, and metabolic acidosis. Management involves discontinuing use, washing the skin, and supportive care. In severe cases, hospital treatment may be needed for salicylate toxicity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor before use, especially during the third trimester, due to potential salicylate absorption.
