Description
Overview of the medicine
Antazol-01 Nasal Drop contains Xylometazoline Hydrochloride, a topical decongestant. It is used to relieve stuffy nose caused by colds, allergies, and sinus infections by reducing swelling and congestion in the nasal passages.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 2-3 drops of 0.1% solution into each nostril, 2-3 times daily. Do not exceed 3 applications per day. Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution advised due to potential systemic effects in sensitive individuals.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
Clear the nose by blowing gently. Tilt the head slightly backward. Instill the prescribed number of drops into each nostril. Keep the head tilted for a few moments to allow the drops to spread. Avoid sharing the bottle to prevent contamination. Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days to avoid rebound congestion.
Mechanism of Action
Xylometazoline acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, primarily on alpha-1 receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa. This causes vasoconstriction, leading to reduced blood flow, decreased swelling, and alleviation of nasal congestion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-10 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion for systemically absorbed amount.
Half life
Locally acting, minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life not clinically relevant for topical use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from nasal application.
Metabolism
Primarily local metabolism; systemically absorbed amount is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to xylometazoline or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.
- •Patients with rhinitis sicca (dry rhinitis) or atrophic rhinitis.
- •Following trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or any surgery exposing the dura mater.
- •Children under 2 years of age.
Drug Interactions
Tricyclic Antidepressants
Increased risk of hypertension, especially with systemic absorption.
Other sympathomimetic drugs
Increased risk of additive cardiovascular effects.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Concurrent use may potentiate the hypertensive effects of xylometazoline, leading to a hypertensive crisis.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe central nervous system depression (e.g., drowsiness, coma), marked hypertension followed by hypotension, bradycardia, and hypothermia. Children are more susceptible to systemic effects. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage (if ingested) and respiratory support.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation should only be done if clearly necessary and after consulting a doctor, as there is insufficient data on human exposure. Systemic absorption is minimal, but caution is still advised.
