Description
Overview of the medicine
Apevit-B 5 mg Tablet is a combination medicine containing Cyproheptadine and Vitamin B Complex. It is primarily used to stimulate appetite, promote weight gain, and treat various allergic conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 tablet 2-3 times daily, or as directed by the physician. Dosage should be individualized and adjusted according to the patient's response.
Elderly
Lower initial doses may be required due to increased susceptibility to side effects. Use with caution.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. For appetite stimulation, it is often recommended to take it before meals.
Mechanism of Action
Cyproheptadine acts as a serotonin and histamine H1-receptor antagonist. Its serotonin antagonistic property is believed to stimulate appetite. As an H1-receptor antagonist, it helps in alleviating allergic symptoms. Vitamin B complex provides essential vitamins for metabolism and overall health.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antihistaminic effects usually begin within 15-60 minutes. Appetite stimulation is more gradual.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (as metabolites) and some in feces.
Half life
The elimination half-life of cyproheptadine is approximately 8-16 hours.
Absorption
Cyproheptadine is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 6-9 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via glucuronidation. B vitamins are metabolized in various tissues.
