Description
Overview of the medicine
Aride 200 mg Tablet contains Cefixime, a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and uncomplicated gonorrhea. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 200 mg to 400 mg daily, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses. For most infections, 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours is recommended. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single 400 mg dose is typical.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min. For CrCl between 21-60 mL/min, 75% of the standard dose may be given. For CrCl less than 20 mL/min, 50% of the standard dose is recommended.
How to Take
Aride 200 mg Tablet should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. For best results, it is recommended to take the tablet at regular intervals as prescribed by the doctor. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a bactericidal antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours. The remainder is excreted via non-renal mechanisms, likely biliary/fecal.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Absorption may be slightly delayed by food but the total amount absorbed remains unchanged.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any penicillin antibiotic.
Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations. Therapeutic drug monitoring of carbamazepine is recommended.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives, leading to a risk of unintended pregnancy. Additional contraceptive measures may be required.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR), leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of coagulation parameters is advised.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. There is no specific antidote for cefixime. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove cefixime in significant amounts. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in human milk in small concentrations; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

YesClinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials have established the efficacy and safety of Cefixime for various bacterial infections. Post-marketing surveillance data also consistently support its use.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., serum creatinine, BUN) in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged high-dose therapy.
- Liver function tests (e.g., ALT, AST) if liver dysfunction is suspected.
- Complete blood count (CBC) if prolonged therapy is anticipated due to potential hematological side effects.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize patient compliance to complete the full antibiotic course to prevent resistance.
- Advise patients to report any signs of severe diarrhea, allergic reactions, or unusual bleeding promptly.
- Consider renal function adjustment for elderly patients or those with known kidney impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve. Stopping early may lead to a return of the infection and development of antibiotic resistance.
- Do not share your medication with others, and do not use it for conditions other than those for which it was prescribed.
- If you experience severe diarrhea or allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling), contact your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
This medicine may cause dizziness in some individuals. If you experience dizziness, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of fluids during the course of treatment.
- Avoid alcohol consumption if it exacerbates gastrointestinal side effects or if advised by your doctor.
