Description
Overview of the medicine
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg every 8 hours, or 875 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. Max 4g/day.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dosage based on creatinine clearance. e.g., CrCl 10-30 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 12 hours; CrCl <10 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. For best absorption, it is often recommended to take at the start of a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan polymers, which are a major component of bacterial cell walls.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection type, generally within hours to days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 1-2 hours. Food does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized, mainly to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
