Description
Overview of the medicine
Axofyl 200 mg Tablet is a bronchodilator used to prevent and treat symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It helps to relax the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 200 mg twice daily, adjusted based on clinical response and plasma levels. Max 400 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Lower initial doses (e.g., 100 mg twice daily) recommended due to reduced clearance; adjust with caution and monitor plasma levels.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate impairment. Monitor closely in severe cases; hepatic metabolism is more critical.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, crush, or break it. Take consistently at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways and stimulating respiratory drive, making breathing easier. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Renal excretion, mainly as metabolites; a small percentage is excreted unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 7-9 hours, variable depending on age and smoking status.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, peak plasma levels within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic via CYP1A2 and CYP2E1 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients.
- Acute myocardial infarction.
- Severe uncontrolled hypertension.
- Active peptic ulcer.
- Convulsive disorders (epilepsy).
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers (non-selective)
May antagonize the bronchodilator effects of Axofyl.
Phenytoin, Rifampicin, Carbamazepine
May decrease Axofyl plasma levels, reducing efficacy. Dose increase may be required.
Cimetidine, Erythromycin, Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
May increase Axofyl plasma levels, leading to toxicity. Dose reduction may be required.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, restlessness, tremors, palpitations, and potentially seizures or cardiac arrhythmias. Management involves gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and symptomatic supportive care. Monitor plasma Axofyl levels and vital signs closely.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Closely monitor maternal Axofyl levels. Excreted into breast milk, caution advised. Consult a doctor.
