Description
Overview of the medicine
Azikil 200 mg Suspension contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children and adults, including respiratory tract infections, ear infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: For many infections, 500 mg (12.5 mL of Azikil 200 mg/5 mL suspension) as a single dose on Day 1, then 250 mg (6.25 mL) once daily on Days 2-5, or 500 mg (12.5 mL) once daily for 3 days. Dosing should be based on clinical indication and physician's advice.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution is advised in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Azikil Suspension should be administered orally, once daily. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby preventing the translation of messenger RNA. This leads to an inhibition of bacterial growth and replication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects are typically observed within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the bile; a small percentage (about 6%) is excreted via urine.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is long, ranging from 2 to 4 days, due to extensive tissue distribution.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but absorption is decreased by food. Bioavailability is approximately 37%.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by demethylation into inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels; monitor digoxin levels.
Warfarin
Potentiates anticoagulant effects; monitor prothrombin time carefully.
Nelfinavir
Increases azithromycin serum concentrations; no dosage adjustment necessary for azithromycin.
QT-prolonging drugs
Coadministration with other drugs known to prolong the QT interval (e.g., antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics) may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Caution is advised.
Antacids (aluminum- and magnesium-containing)
May reduce peak plasma levels of azithromycin. Administer azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C and protect from light and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension at 2-30°C; do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves symptomatic and supportive measures as needed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Azithromycin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
