Overview of the medicine
Azikil 500 mg Tablet contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections, 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days. For specific STDs, a single 1 g dose.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. However, taking it with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. It prevents the translocation of peptide bonds, effectively stopping bacterial growth.

Onset
Within hours of first dose for some infections.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in bile; a small amount is excreted in urine.
Half life
68 hours (terminal half-life), allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 37%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, but to a limited extent; main route is N-demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or any excipients of the tablet.
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease peak plasma concentrations of azithromycin; administer azithromycin at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Warfarin
Potentiates the anticoagulant effect of warfarin; monitor PT/INR closely.
Nelfinavir
May increase azithromycin serum concentrations; adjust azithromycin dose if necessary.
Ergot derivatives
Increased risk of ergotism; avoid concomitant use.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves supportive measures and symptomatic treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted into breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
