Description
Overview of the medicine
Azilab 200 mg Suspension is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For specific indications or patients unable to swallow tablets. Dosage varies by infection type. For uncomplicated Chlamydia: 1000 mg (25 mL of 200mg/5mL suspension) as a single dose. For other infections, consult physician for appropriate dosing.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed for elderly unless severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment (CrCl >10 mL/min). Use with caution in severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. To minimize gastric upset, it can be taken with food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use the provided measuring device to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This primarily results in bacteriostatic action, but can be bactericidal at high concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in bile; a small amount is excreted in urine.
Half life
Terminal half-life is 2-4 days (due to extensive tissue uptake and slow release).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but bioavailability is approximately 37% due to significant first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, but not extensively metabolized by cytochrome P450 system. Metabolites are not active.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased digoxin levels, monitor digoxin concentrations.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect, monitor INR.
Nelfinavir
Increased azithromycin concentrations.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
Reduce peak serum levels of azithromycin, separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Store reconstituted suspension at room temperature (15-30°C) or refrigerate (2-8°C) as per product instructions; do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are typically extensions of common side effects, such as severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Hearing loss (reversible) has been reported. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and general supportive measures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during lactation due to potential for adverse effects on the infant (e.g., diarrhea, fungal infection).
