Description
Overview of the medicine
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin, ear, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections, 500 mg once daily for 3 days OR 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg once daily on days 2-5.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution with severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it can be taken with food. Do not take with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby stopping bacterial growth and reproduction.

Clinical effects usually observed within 2-3 days of initiation.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in bile; a small portion is excreted renally.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 2-4 days, allowing for once-daily dosing.

Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 37%.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism.

Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
