Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg to 1 g every 6 hours, depending on the severity of infection. Max 4 g/day.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required. e.g., Creatinine clearance 10-50 mL/min: 500 mg every 8-12 hours; <10 mL/min: 250 mg every 12 hours.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Metformin
Cefalexin may increase metformin plasma concentrations.
Probenecid
May increase cefalexin levels by decreasing renal excretion.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. Treatment is primarily supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefalexin is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
