Description
Overview of the medicine
Bactoderm (Mupirocin) is an antibiotic ointment used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis, caused by susceptible bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin film to the affected skin area. The treated area may be covered with gauze if desired. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys as monic acid.
Half life
Approximately 20-40 minutes (systemic).
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin; absorption increases through abraded or damaged skin.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized in the skin and blood to its inactive metabolite, monic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of its excipients.
- Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use (for topical ointment, specifically).
Drug Interactions
No significant systemic interactions
No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are expected due to minimal systemic absorption of mupirocin when applied topically.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice. Local irritation may occur with excessive topical application.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether mupirocin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised.
