Description
Overview of the medicine
Becobion-100-mg-injection is a vitamin B complex injection containing essential B vitamins (B1, B6, B12) crucial for various metabolic processes, nerve function, and red blood cell formation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 ampoules (2-4 ml) intramuscularly or intravenously slowly, daily or on alternate days, as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment usually required, but caution in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment, consult physician.
How to Take
Administer intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV) slowly. IV administration should be done over a few minutes to avoid adverse reactions.
Mechanism of Action
The B vitamins act as co-enzymes in numerous metabolic pathways. Thiamine (B1) is vital for carbohydrate metabolism. Pyridoxine (B6) plays a key role in amino acid, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism, and neurotransmitter synthesis. Cyanocobalamin (B12) is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and the maintenance of the nervous system.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms can begin within hours to days, depending on the severity of deficiency.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged or as metabolites in the urine.
Half life
Variable for individual B vitamins, generally short (hours) for excess to be excreted.
Absorption
Water-soluble B vitamins are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (oral) or rapidly from the injection site (parenteral).
Metabolism
Converted to their active coenzyme forms in the liver and other tissues.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
- •Known allergy to thiamine, pyridoxine, or cyanocobalamin.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to vitamin B deficiencies and may increase the requirement for these vitamins.
Levodopa
High doses of Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) may reduce the effectiveness of Levodopa (used in Parkinson's disease), although this interaction is less common with newer formulations of levodopa combined with a decarboxylase inhibitor.
Furosemide
May increase urinary excretion of thiamine.
Isoniazid, Penicillamine
These drugs are pyridoxine antagonists and may increase the requirement for Vitamin B6.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
B vitamins are water-soluble, and excess amounts are typically excreted in the urine. Acute overdose is rare. Very high doses of pyridoxine over a long period can lead to peripheral neuropathy. Treatment is generally supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended for supplementation during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands. Consult a doctor before use.
