Description
Overview of the medicine
Benkill-CV 250 mg Tablet is an antibiotic combination medicine containing Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin kills bacteria, while Clavulanic Acid prevents bacterial enzymes from destroying Amoxicillin, thus enhancing its effectiveness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild to moderate infections: One Benkill-CV 250 mg tablet (Amoxicillin 250 mg / Clavulanic Acid 62.5 mg) three times daily. For more severe infections, higher strengths may be prescribed. Duration usually 7-10 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment necessary unless renal impairment is present. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-30 mL/min: 250/62.5 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min: 250/62.5 mg every 24 hours. Hemodialysis patients: 250/62.5 mg every 24 hours, plus an additional dose during and at the end of dialysis.
How to Take
Take the tablet with a full glass of water at the start of a meal to minimize gastrointestinal intolerance. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis. Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, inactivates various beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, which would otherwise degrade Amoxicillin, thereby extending Amoxicillin's antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily renal (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) for amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid also excreted primarily renally, with some non-renal excretion.
Half life
Amoxicillin: 1-1.3 hours; Clavulanic Acid: 0.9-1.2 hours. Prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, food may slightly decrease peak plasma concentration but not overall absorption. Peak plasma levels for both components are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is partially metabolized to an inactive penicilloic acid. Clavulanic Acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with Amoxicillin/Clavulanate therapy
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases amoxicillin blood levels by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, especially in hyperuricemic patients.
Methotrexate
Increases methotrexate toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (advise additional contraception).
Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset and fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Convulsions may occur in patients with impaired renal function or those receiving high doses. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can remove Amoxicillin/Clavulanate from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Can be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, consult doctor. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation; monitor infant for diarrhea, candidiasis, and skin rash.

Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, bilirubin) in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Renal function tests (creatinine, BUN) in patients with renal impairment
- Complete blood count (CBC) during prolonged therapy
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to complete the full course of treatment to prevent resistance.
- Be aware of potential hypersensitivity reactions, especially in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.
- Monitor liver function tests periodically in patients on prolonged therapy or with pre-existing hepatic impairment.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not share this medicine with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
- Take with food to reduce stomach upset.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
