Description
Overview of the medicine
Benkill-CV 500 mg Tablet is a combination antibiotic containing Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, and Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections that are resistant to Amoxicillin alone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One Benkill-CV 500 mg/125 mg tablet every 8 hours or as directed by physician. Duration of treatment varies depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For severe impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min), dose reduction or extended dosing interval is necessary.
How to Take
Take orally with a meal to reduce potential gastrointestinal intolerance. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis. Clavulanic Acid protects Amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, thereby extending Amoxicillin's spectrum of activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually observed within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, mainly by tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Amoxicillin: approximately 1.3 hours; Clavulanic Acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Both Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid are well absorbed orally. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Amoxicillin is minimally metabolized. Clavulanic Acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any component of the formulation
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid therapy
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs plasma levels of amoxicillin.
Methotrexate
Increases methotrexate toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (advise additional contraception).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, and rarely, convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can remove both amoxicillin and clavulanic acid from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; observe infants for diarrhea, candidiasis, or skin rash.
