Description
Overview of the medicine
Benkinson 200 mg capsule is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg once or twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. Treatment duration typically 7-14 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance (CrCl) 30-50 mL/min, 200 mg once daily. For CrCl < 30 mL/min, 100 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally, with or without food. Do not chew or crush. Avoid taking with dairy products, calcium-fortified juices, or antacids, iron, or zinc supplements as they can reduce absorption. If necessary, take these at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after Benkinson.
Mechanism of Action
Benkinsacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (60-70%) via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion, with a small portion excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly and well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes minor hepatic metabolism to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to benkinsacin or any other fluoroquinolone.
- History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
- Children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) due to the risk of cartilage damage.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect, leading to increased risk of bleeding. Monitor INR.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
Increased risk of CNS stimulation and seizures.
Antacids (containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium), iron, zinc supplements
Reduced absorption of benkinsacin. Take Benkinson at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage or administration of activated charcoal may be considered within the first hour after ingestion. Adequate hydration should be maintained. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing benkinsacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Benkinsacin is generally not recommended during pregnancy or lactation due to potential risks of arthropathy (cartilage damage) in the fetus/infant. Consult a doctor for alternative treatments if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
