Description
Overview of the medicine
Bepotastine is a second-generation antihistamine primarily used to treat allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. It helps alleviate symptoms like sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg orally once daily. Maximum recommended dose is 20 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment usually required, but use with caution due to potential age-related organ function decline.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min), consider reducing dose to 5 mg every other day.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Can be taken any time of the day.
Mechanism of Action
Bepotastine selectively inhibits H1 histamine receptors and stabilizes mast cells, thereby preventing the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, which cause allergic symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in urine, with about 75-90% eliminated within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 2.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentration reached in about 1-2 hours. Oral bioavailability is approximately 37%.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; hepatic metabolism is negligible, primarily by aldehyde oxidase.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to bepotastine or any components of the formulation.
- Children under 2 years of age (for oral formulation).
Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions
No significant drug interactions reported with common medications, including cytochrome P450 inhibitors or substrates.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote. Manage overdose symptomatically with supportive measures. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing woman as it is unknown if bepotastine is excreted in human milk.
