Description
Overview of the medicine
Betapro 10 mg Tablet contains Propranolol Hydrochloride, a non-selective beta-blocker. It is used to treat various conditions including high blood pressure, angina, irregular heartbeats, anxiety, migraine, and essential tremor.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical starting dose for hypertension or angina is 40 mg twice daily, increasing as needed. For anxiety or migraine prophylaxis, 10-20 mg two to three times daily.
Elderly
Lower initial doses may be required, titrate carefully based on response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
No significant dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment; monitor carefully in severe cases.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably before meals. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Maintain a consistent dosing schedule.
Mechanism of Action
Propranolol non-selectively blocks beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors. This blockade reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, leading to a decrease in blood pressure. It also inhibits renin release and has anti-anxiety and anti-migraine effects by acting on the central nervous system.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour (oral)
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys (urine) as metabolites.
Half life
3-6 hours
Absorption
Rapid and almost complete absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, but undergoes significant first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver (mainly via CYP2D6 and CYP1A2) to active and inactive metabolites.

- Bronchial asthma or bronchospasm
- Cardiogenic shock
- Sinus bradycardia (slow heart rate)
- Second or third-degree heart block (without a pacemaker)

Paradoxical hypertension and bradycardia may occur.
Antidiabetic drugs
May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia.
Calcium Channel Blockers (e.g., Verapamil, Diltiazem)
Increased risk of bradycardia and hypotension.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe bradycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm, and acute cardiac failure. Treatment is supportive, including atropine for bradycardia, vasopressors for hypotension, and bronchodilators for bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised, monitor infant for beta-blockade effects.
