Description
Overview of the medicine
Betason-N Eye Drop combines a corticosteroid (Betamethasone) and an antibiotic (Neomycin) to treat inflammatory conditions of the eye that are complicated by bacterial infection or where there is a risk of bacterial infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One or two drops instilled into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every 4-6 hours. In severe cases, dosage may be increased to every 2 hours, then tapered as improvement occurs. Do not use for more than 7-10 days without medical supervision.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Close eye gently for a few minutes. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone suppresses the inflammatory response by reducing the release of inflammatory mediators and altering immune responses. Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects usually within hours; antibiotic effects depend on bacterial load.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine, but minimal for ophthalmic use.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use, as systemic absorption is minimal. For systemically absorbed betamethasone, it's about 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical ophthalmic administration. Locally absorbed into ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Betamethasone is metabolized primarily in the liver. Neomycin is poorly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.
- •Acute untreated purulent ocular infections.
- •Acute herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis).
- •Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva.
- •Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
- •Mycobacterial infections of the eye.
- •Untreated parasitic infections of the eye.
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Medications
Systemic absorption is minimal, so significant systemic drug interactions are unlikely. However, concurrent use of other ophthalmic medications should be discussed with a doctor.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose with topical ophthalmic preparations is unlikely due to limited systemic absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment is advised. Persistent excessive use may lead to local side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as systemic absorption, though minimal, is possible.
