Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.

Symptoms may include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In severe cases, crystalluria leading to renal failure has been observed. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be used to remove Amoxicillin from circulation.

Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy (Category B). Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential side effects (e.g., diarrhea, rash).
