Description
Overview of the medicine
Bilaten (Bilastine) is a non-sedating, second-generation H1 antihistamine used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required in elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment (including end-stage renal disease).
How to Take
The tablet should be taken orally with water, preferably on an empty stomach. It is recommended to take Bilastine one hour before or two hours after food or fruit juice. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine is a potent, selective H1 receptor antagonist with no sedative or cardiotoxic effects at therapeutic doses. It binds to peripheral H1 histamine receptors, thereby blocking the effects of histamine and alleviating allergy symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Approximately 95% of the dose is excreted unchanged, with about 28% in urine and 67% in faeces.
Half life
Elimination half-life is approximately 10-14 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached in about 1-1.5 hours. Bioavailability is reduced by food and fruit juices.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in humans; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance bilastine or to any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Diltiazem
Co-administration increases Bilastine plasma concentrations.
Erythromycin
Co-administration increases Bilastine plasma concentrations.
Ketoconazole
Co-administration increases Bilastine plasma concentrations.
Grapefruit juice
Significantly reduces the bioavailability of bilastine.
Storage
Store in a dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given. There is no specific antidote for Bilastine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harmful effects on pregnancy, embryonic/foetal development, parturition or postnatal development. Use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended unless considered essential by the physician.
