Description
Overview of the medicine
Biozinc-B is a combination supplement containing Zinc and a full spectrum of B-complex vitamins. It is formulated to address deficiencies of these essential micronutrients and support overall health, immune function, and energy metabolism.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, 1 tablet daily, preferably with a meal, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, unless specific medical conditions require adjustment. Consultation with a doctor is advised.
Renal_impairment
Generally considered safe at recommended doses. High doses of zinc may require caution in severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. Take with a glass of water, preferably with food to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc is crucial for immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and enzymatic reactions. B-complex vitamins are essential coenzymes involved in energy production, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, nerve function, and red blood cell formation. Together, they help maintain cellular integrity and metabolic processes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional effects are gradual, observable over days to weeks with consistent use.
Excretion
Zinc is primarily excreted via feces, with minor urinary excretion. Water-soluble B vitamins are mainly excreted unchanged in the urine; B12 is excreted through bile and urine.
Half life
Elemental Zinc has a biological half-life of 120-300 days. Most B vitamins are water-soluble and have short half-lives (hours) with excess excreted in urine, except for B12 which is stored in the liver.
Absorption
Zinc is primarily absorbed in the small intestine, with absorption varying based on dietary factors. B vitamins are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine. Bioavailability is generally good.
Metabolism
Zinc is largely metabolized through protein binding and excretion. B vitamins are metabolized as coenzymes in various metabolic pathways; excess water-soluble vitamins are not extensively metabolized but excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Zinc or any B-complex vitamins or excipients.
- •Acute gastric ulcer (for high doses of zinc).
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) may reduce the efficacy of Levodopa in Parkinson's disease, unless combined with carbidopa.
Diuretics
Some diuretics may increase urinary excretion of zinc.
Iron supplements
High doses of iron can inhibit zinc absorption, and vice versa. Separate administration times.
Tetracycline and Quinolone antibiotics
Zinc can chelate these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Administer zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Storage
Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose of zinc can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and metallic taste. Chronic high intake of zinc (above tolerable upper limits) can lead to copper deficiency, impaired immune function, and neurological problems. B-complex vitamins are water-soluble; excessive intake usually leads to urinary excretion with low toxicity risk, though very high doses of some B vitamins can have adverse effects (e.g., neuropathy with B6).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and essential at recommended doses during pregnancy and lactation. However, always consult a healthcare provider before taking any supplements during these periods to ensure appropriate dosing and safety.
