Description
Overview of the medicine
BPCare 160 mg Tablet contains Valsartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It helps to widen blood vessels, making it easier for your heart to pump blood.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Hypertension: Initially 80 mg once daily, may be increased to 160 mg or 320 mg daily. Heart Failure: Initially 40 mg twice daily, titrated up to 160 mg twice daily as tolerated.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required in elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe impairment, caution is advised.
How to Take
Take orally once or twice daily with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Valsartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. This inhibits the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antihypertensive effect within 2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (about 83%) and urine (about 13%).
Half life
Approximately 6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Absolute bioavailability is approximately 23%.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; only about 20% is metabolized to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy (especially second and third trimesters)
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment
- Severe hepatic impairment, biliary cirrhosis, and cholestasis
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased serum lithium concentrations and toxicity.
Aliskiren
Increased risk of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal impairment in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
May reduce the antihypertensive effect and increase the risk of renal impairment.
Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., Spironolactone) / Potassium supplements
May lead to hyperkalemia.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include marked hypotension and dizziness. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including intravenous fluid administration for hypotension. Valsartan is not removed by hemodialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Valsartan is contraindicated in pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to risk of fetal injury or death. It is not known if valsartan is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
