Description
Overview of the medicine
BPMox 125 mg Pediatric Drop is an antibiotic medicine containing Amoxicillin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including ear, nose, throat, urinary tract, skin, and lower respiratory tract infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for this pediatric drop formulation.
Elderly
Not applicable for this pediatric drop formulation.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be required in patients with severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral suspension. Administer orally using the provided calibrated dropper, usually every 8 hours (three times daily) or every 12 hours (twice daily) as directed by the physician. Can be taken with or without food. Shake well before each use.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the peptidoglycan synthesis that is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the bacterial cell wall. This leads to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 60-80% of an oral dose is excreted in the urine within 6-8 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function; prolonged in neonates and patients with renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken with food. Peak plasma concentrations are usually achieved within 1-2 hours after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 70-90%.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; about 10-25% of the dose is metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or any other penicillin.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam agent (e.g., cephalosporins, carbapenems).
- •Infectious mononucleosis (risk of rash).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, leading to increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin.
Allopurinol
Concomitant use with amoxicillin may increase the incidence of skin rashes.
Methotrexate
Amoxicillin may reduce methotrexate excretion, potentially increasing its toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely).
Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time; caution with concomitant use.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In isolated cases, renal failure has been observed. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and/or activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion. Hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from the circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Limited data in pregnant women suggest no increased risk. Considered generally safe during pregnancy. Amoxicillin is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infants for diarrhea, candidiasis, or allergic reactions.
