Description
Overview of the medicine
BPMOX 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the penicillin group, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and ear infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Standard adult dose is typically 250 mg to 500 mg orally every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg orally every 12 hours, depending on infection severity. (Note: 125mg suspension is usually for pediatrics, but general adult dosage included for completeness)
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 10-30 mL/min: 250 mg every 12 hours. Creatinine clearance <10 mL/min: 250 mg every 24 hours. (Dosage for specific indications may vary)
How to Take
Administer orally. The suspension can be taken with or without food. Shake well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours (in individuals with normal renal function)
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food. Bioavailability is approximately 70-90%.
Metabolism
Limited metabolism; a small proportion is metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., cephalosporins, carbapenems).
- •Infectious mononucleosis (may cause rash).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs plasma levels of amoxicillin.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of rash, particularly in hyperuricemic patients.
Methotrexate
May decrease renal clearance of methotrexate, increasing toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
Amoxicillin may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely reported).
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May alter coagulation time; careful monitoring advised.
Storage
Store unreconstituted powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C); do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balances. Renal impairment may occur in very high doses. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Considered generally safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential side effects like diarrhea or thrush.
